Abstract |
The main aim of this research project is to develop a model of cultural competence in health professionals, specifically based on the Portuguese context, emphasizing the complex interplay between culture, unequal power and social exclusion on health and healthcare with culturally diverse patients. Assuming that healthcare often occurs in contexts of power asymmetrical relations among health professionals and their patients, diverse sources of asymmetries will be examined. Taking a participative action-research approach, particular attention is given to health needs assessment, good practices, and the empowerment of culturally diverse patients. A multi-method approach will be used, combining qualitative (focus groups, interviews with key informants, case studies) and quantitative research techniques (mainly secondary sources and survey). Recommendations for policy-making and intervention planning will be developed, with the final purpose of enhancing the provision of adequate, accessible and quality healthcare to all the population in Portugal, independently of gender, ethnicity or origin country.
