Title img Beyond philanthropy: contributions of Solidarity Tourism to Community Development - A comparative analysis Cape Verde - Sao Tome and Principe

Researcher img Marques, Joana

Supervisor img --

Abstract img Within the context of the Master in Social and Solidarity Economy and the research project “The Tourism Impact in Community Development in Africa: Analysis of Island Experiences”, on going at Centro de Estudos Africanos (African Studies Centre - CEA/ ISCTE-IUL), a comparative study was developed aiming to analyse the viability of a tourism based on the principles of Solidarity Economy and to evaluate the potentialities and constraints of such tourism initiatives in the development of local communities. The analysis is based on two Small Island Developing States (SIDS) among the Portuguese-speaking African Countries: Cape Verde and Sao Tome and Principe. The starting point for the research were the initiatives and projects named as Solidarity Tourism, analysing different concepts and practices of these new tourism approaches that differ from mass tourism and fall in a movement that seeks to counter the negative effects of tourism activities and to promote a more humanized and sustainable development of host communities. Existing literature approaches Solidarity Tourism as a tool for North-South cooperation, looking at solidarity in terms of the Northern tourists seeking to participate in the development of the communities they visit. To go beyond the more paternalistic perspectives, the framework of the research is given by the theory and practice of Solidarity Economy, arguing that, more than the solidarity from those who come from outside, Solidarity Tourism requires the involvement and solidarity among local people. Two Solidarity Tourism projects were identified for the analysis: one promoted by Atelier Mar in Lajedos, Santo Antao, and the other promoted by Natcultura in Diogo Vaz, Sao Tome. Based on the case study methodology, the research intended to ascertain to what extent the principles of Solidarity Economy are present in Solidarity Tourism projects and their contribution to Community Development.
