Introduction to activities to come.


Activity 1

How to make a questionnaire? Potentialities and limits of a data collection technique.

Researchers: Catarina Egreja e Ana Rita Capucha
This section has as its objective to give the participants notions on the methodology of the inquiry through a questionnaire. The session will start with a framing on this methodology, addressing its characteristics, its potentialities/limitations, its applicability in social sciences and also, some modalities which help their process of application nowadays – for example, online platforms. Participants will also have the opportunity to reflect on a research theme of their interest and to create their own questionnaire.


Activity 2

Analysis of historical sources

Researchers: Maria João Vaz e Gonçalo Gonçalves
Summary: In this activity students analyse historical sources (criminal files and police documentation) researching characterizing elements of urban life in Lisbon, in the sense of reconstituting quotidian configurations of popular groups, their locations, their practices and behaviours.


Activity 3

City Halls: who are the presidents?

Researcher: Maria Antónia Pires de Almeida 

Summary: We will develop an investigation on the CVs of Mayors of a chosen district in order to create a sociological characterization of local elected officials. The objective is to learn techniques pertaining to content analysis, and at the same time, to take conscience of the need to know elected representatives and with this knowledge have tools to make an informed choice during electoral periods. The aim is to promote the interest in the political participation of young people and citizenship practices.


Activity 4

The “conversation” in the context of health.

Researchers: Mário Santos e Brígida Riso
Summary: In this activity we will give information to the participants on the basic notions of the interview in a sociological context. After being familiarized with this research technique, interview situations will be simulated and there will be a debate the main potentialities and limitations of their applications to research in the field of health.

 


Activity 5

Collection and analysis of data on Portuguese emigration.

Researchers: Inês Espírito Santo e Inês Vidigal
Summary: Discussion on the importance of analysing the Portuguese migratory phenomenon. Collection of statistical indicators on the Portuguese residents abroad and the movement of Portuguese emigration to be published on the website of the Emigration Observatory.


Activity 6

The public space under the ethnographic eye

Researcher: Rita Cachado
Summary: In this activity we will train the ethnographic eye through the observation of the surrounding space. After a brief introduction to the methodology, the students will build an observation script and will start a walk through the surrounding space throughout which they will seek to collect and register, in different ways, what they see. After, there will be time to organize the results and exchange ideas on the challenges of this methodology.
