CIES received approval for four projects in the IC&DT 2023 call

CIES recently had four research projects approved in the context of the IC&DT Projects Call in All Scientific Fields – 2023, promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), in conjunction with the Innovation and Digital Transition Program – COMPETE 2030 and the Regional Programs of the North, Center, Lisbon, Alentejo, and Algarve. The projects have a maximum duration of 36 months and an eligible investment of up to €250,000.

The approved projects reflect the diversity and depth of the research carried out at CIES, addressing emerging topics of high social, academic, and political relevance.
The projects were approved in the following panels respectively: Media and Communication, Law and Political Science, Education Sciences, and Sociology.

PuReSC – Public Reception of Science and Technology

Coordinated by Marta Entradas, this international project examines the public's relationship with scientific communication promoted by universities. With collaborations in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany, PuReSC aims to contribute to a more informed debate on public engagement with science and to strengthen the role of universities as active agents in scientific communication and in defending their institutional autonomy.

The sequence of party promises: From the decision on what to promise to the consequences of (non)compliance with the mandate

Coordinated by Ana Maria Belchior, this project investigates the processes of formulation, fulfilment, and impact of political parties' electoral promises. Using a mixed-methods approach, it analyses issues such as why minority governments fulfil more promises and the consequences of non-compliance on accountability and political polarization.

Knowing, welcoming, including socio-educational inclusion of refugee children and young people from Ukraine

With Maria Manuela Mendes as scientific director, this project focuses on the inclusion of Ukrainian refugee children and young people in the Portuguese education system. Given the current humanitarian crisis and the reception of more than 59,000 refugees by the beginning of 2024, the research adopts a rigorous and multidimensional ethical approach, aiming to expand sociological knowledge on the integration of vulnerable populations and contribute to the construction of more inclusive and cohesive societies.

DIV_EQUAL - Pathways to success for immigrant students in Portuguese schools: diversity and equality

With Teresa Seabra as principal investigator, this project in partnership with the University of Minho aims to identify the factors that condition the school trajectories of students with immigrant backgrounds, proposing practical guidelines for promoting their academic success. With a strong quantitative and qualitative component, the project involves collaboration with entities such as DGEEC, DGE, the Aga Khan Foundation, and APEDI, and includes international consulting.

These four projects reflect the centre's commitment to socially relevant scientific research, reinforcing its role in producing knowledge that contributes to more effective public policies and fairer societies.
