Iscte's Center for Research and Studies in Sociology was created in 1985 as a result of a movement of professors from Iscte's sociology department, with the intention of setting up a formal space to develop joint research activities and, in this way, contribute to the advancement of knowledge and the development of society.

With Sociology as its core scientific area, the Center quickly established itself as a reference in this field, later expanding its activity to the areas of public policy, political science, communication sciences, modern and contemporary history, and social work.

Throughout its history, CIES-Iscte has played a leading role in social science research, in accordance with international standards of excellence.

To mark the Center's 40th anniversary, CIES has prepared a series of activities open to the entire Iscte community and the public.
