The research group conducts historical research from the early modern period to the modern and contemporary periods, integrating contributions from various fields.

Despite the diverse topics, the group maintains a historiographical perspective that emphasizes global integration rather rhan a nationalist viewpoint.

The research group focurses on historical research in the following areas:

• History of population and demography: Focuses on demography, family history, and marriage systems in the Modern and Early Modern Periods, with a particular focus on the "Portuguese Empire" from the eighteenth century to the early nineteenth century.
• Economic history: Research primarily focuses on key historical periods such as the Pombalismo and the Liberalism and Regeneration in the nineteenth century.
• History of contemporary social movements: Emphasizes opposition movements to the dictatorship in Portugal from 1926 to 1974, with particular attention to student opposition and its role in establishing the democratic system in the 1970s and subsequent periods
• History of crime and social control: Current research focuses on the study of transnational circulations of criminal practices and the development of new strategies to control them, especially through police and diplomatic cooperation between various countries.
• History of science, technology, and energy: Research covers a variety of topics, including the history of science, nuclear energy, Environmental History, and the history of the Anthropocene.

Brings together researchers from different national and foreign institutions to disseminate recent research on cities and empires in modern and contemporary times, as well as related themes.

New Perspectives on Modern History - Cycle of Seminars

Presentation of ongoing projects developed by Portuguese and foreign historians from various universities, specialties and generations. This cycle of seminars will allow us to get to know the current trends of research in Modern History.
