CIES at the European Researchers Night 2024
30.09.2024

CIES-Iscte returned to the European Researchers' Night on September 27, 2024, at the National Museum of Natural History and Science.

Dedicated to Science for Global Challenges, in this edition CIES was present with two activities, as part of the European project Developing algorithm literacy for all, to fight disinformation and foster e-inclusion with quality information for knowledge-based democratic societies (Algowatch) and the Laboratory for Social Studies on Birth (nascer.pt).

The European Researchers' Night is an initiative that aims to break down the barriers that separate science from citizens and demystify the image of the scientist as someone distant and inaccessible. Funded by the European Commission, this initiative has been running since 2005. Researchers from CIES-Iscte have taken part by organizing debates, quizzes, exhibitions and science cafés.

CIES ACTIVITIES

Being Born into Society: Exploring the Social Dimensions of Birth
Violeta Alarcão, Sónia Pintassilgo, Mariana Évora e Dulce Morgado Neves

In this scientific activity related to the theme of birth and organized by the nascer.pt laboratory, participants explored the social dimensions related to birth, such as cultural influence, public policies, gender roles and individual experiences, through interactive dynamics such as hands-on activities, quizzes, conversations and guided tours.
In the hands-on activities, participants were invited to create works of art (paintings, drawings or collages) related to the theme of birth to stimulate debate. The quizzes and talks featured games with questions related to birth, from the point of view of myths and facts about childbirth, prenatal care and the history of obstetrics.

Desafios com Algoritmos
Vítor Tomé e Ana Pinto Martinho

Participants had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the Algowatch project by exploring the project's website and starting with interactive quizzes on algorithms and artificial intelligence. After selecting and answering one of the quizzes provided, each participant was asked for detailed feedback on the questions and topics covered. This activity aims not only to promote understanding of the concepts explored, but also to contribute to and raise awareness of the challenges of artificial intelligence.
