New book addresses identities, racism, and Afro-European resistance with contributions from CIES-Iscte researchers

The book Afroeuropeans: Identities, Racism and Resistances, recently published by the prestigious academic publisher Routledge, was co-edited by a group of researchers from CIES, Cristina Roldão, Pedro Varela, Otávio Raposo, Ana Raquel Matias, and Raquel Lima offer an in-depth analysis of the experiences and resistance of Afro-descendants in contemporary Europe.

The work brings contributions from academics from various fields and geographical areas, addressing topics such as structural racism, cultural representations, identity politics, and forms of Afro-descendant resistance in European social and political contexts. According to the organizers, the publication seeks not only to denounce persistent forms of institutional and structural racism, but also to value practices of resistance, agency, and knowledge production by Afro-European populations.

This book is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration that incorporates perspectives from sociology, anthropology, cultural studies, education, and political science, reinforcing CIES' commitment to critical social research.
