The Iscte Open Day 2026 brought together researchers and the public in three science communication activities organised by CIES-Iscte and CoLABOR. Through interactive and participatory formats, both institutions reinforced their commitment to bridging scientific research and society, making knowledge accessible to diverse audiences.
Algowatch: understanding artificial intelligence to think critically about it
As part of the Algowatch project, researchers Vítor Tomé and Ana Pinto Martinho invited visitors to explore the project website and take part in interactive quizzes on algorithms and artificial intelligence. Participants were subsequently asked to provide detailed feedback on the questions and topics covered, contributing directly to the ongoing research.
The activity is grounded in a core concern: understanding how algorithms work has become essential for informed and critical citizenship. The Algowatch project aims to map levels of AI literacy and develop resources that support the public in navigating a world increasingly shaped by automated decision-making systems.

Sopa da Pedra: imagining the future of our communities, together
Researcher Rita Cachado facilitated the urban game "Sopa da Pedra" (Stone Soup), developed within the framework of the Erasmus+ project CliCCHE (Climate Change, Cities, Communities and Health Equity). Drawing on the popular folk tale of the same name, the game created an inclusive space for debate in which participants were invited to reflect and contribute ideas about the future of urban communities in the context of climate change.
"Sopa da Pedra" is an educational and participatory tool that places questions of equity, health and sustainability at the centre of discussion. The game is built on the recognition that the impacts of climate change are not evenly distributed and that the most effective responses are those built collectively, with and for communities.

QuizLABOR: using data to understand society
CoLABOR presented the QuizLABOR, an interactive game that invites participants to explore the social and economic reality of Portugal and Europe through real statistical data. The quiz draws on the DataLABOR platform, developed by CoLABOR and freely accessible, which brings together statistical information on labour, employment, social protection, demography, education, health and housing, among other areas.
By turning data into questions and questions into conversation, the QuizLABOR demonstrates how statistical information can be a meaningful and accessible resource for understanding the society we live in.

Research that reaches beyond the institution
The participation of CIES and CoLABOR in the Iscte Open Day 2026 is part of a sustained commitment to science communication and public engagement. Through participatory, interactive and inclusive formats, both institutions affirm that scientific knowledge is more robust and more relevant when it is built and shared in dialogue with society.
