The Iscte Library has selected *Digital Infrastructures of Cognition, Culture, and Democracy*, by Vania Baldi, a researcher at CIES, as its Book of the Month for November.
The book analyses how artificial intelligence and cognitive automation are transforming attention, learning and public life. It proposes a critical framework to counter technocratic drift and rethink agency and democratic accountability in an increasingly automated world.
The book examines how automated decision-making, data-driven platforms and algorithmic infrastructures – alongside neoliberal assessment regimes that discipline individual and institutional ethics through metrics and rankings – are redefining knowledge, the common good, the notion of merit, social relations and democratic life.
Drawing on case studies and a discussion of emerging forms of digital governance, it presents new theoretical frameworks and socio-pedagogical strategies for rethinking digital ecosystems. It also offers conceptual tools for recognising subtle forms of algorithmic power and cultivating more conscious and reflective uses of digital technologies, including the possibilities of algorithmic activism.
The book is part of the Routledge Advances in Artificial Intelligence and Society series, dedicated to interdisciplinary research on the impact of artificial intelligence on social structures, governance and democratic processes.
It is on display on the first floor of the Iscte Library, where you can also find a leaflet containing bibliographical information about the author.
