ABSTRACT
Is humour based on the simple, linear idea that laughter is an immediate, momentary act that doesn't require much thought? What do we think about when we think about humour? Is this thinking done by everyone? These were the starting questions for an exploratory study, in the field of sociology, which sought to understand the relationship between reflexivity, as a sociological concept, and the artistic area of stand-up comedy. The main objective was to know whether this comedy format produces reflexive stimuli, at what moments and of what kind among its audiences. A qualitative approach was used and consumers of live stand-up comedy were interviewed about their practices, preferences and reflections. It was found that all the interviewees recognized that this format of humour makes them think about themselves, others, and society during and after live shows, varying in the way the stimuli occur and are activated. Analysis of these stimuli reveals that stand-up comedy not only mirrors ideas, representations and social values but also helps to build individual and social perceptions.
